How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade is converted to grade points on the standard 4.0 scale, multiplied by that course's credit hours, and added up across every course. Dividing that total by the total credit hours gives a weighted GPA, one that reflects course load, not just a plain average of grades.
GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) / Σ(credit hours)
Grade point scale used
A+/A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. This is the most common US scale; some institutions use slightly different values, so check your school's official scale for anything that needs to be exact.
Frequently asked questions
Why does credit hours matter for GPA?+
A 4-credit course reflects more coursework than a 1-credit course, so it should influence your overall GPA more. Weighting by credit hours makes the GPA proportional to actual course load instead of treating every class equally.
Does this match my school's official GPA scale exactly?+
It uses the most common US 4.0 scale. Some schools use different point values (for example, a straight A- = 3.67 instead of 3.7), so treat this as a close estimate and confirm against your institution's grading policy for anything official.
